Community Read: “American Sirens” by Kevin Hazzard

This October, we are inviting everyone to join us in our first ever community read of “American Sirens” by Kevin Hazard.

“American Sirens” is the story of an unjustly forgotten group of Black men in Pittsburgh who became the first paramedics in America, saving lives and changing the course of emergency medicine around the world.

Copies of the book will be available to borrow at CCM Edgewood and Forest Hills, or to purchase at Stay Gold Books in Regent Square.

To culminate the community read, CCM in partnership with WQED will be hosting a special screening of the documentary on the same topic “Freedom House Ambulance: the FIRST Responders” at 6 p.m. on November 4 in the Edgewood Club Living Room.

After the screening of the 28-minute film, there will be a Q&A with Freedom House ambulance driver John Moon, and documentary director Anette Banks.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Edgewood Historical Society. The event is free, but it is encouraged to register online at ccmellorlibrary.org in advance due to limited space.

Throughout all of October, stop by CCM Edgewood and Forest Hills for interactive stations that connect readers with each other and the material. Community members can share their favorite quotes, answer discussion questions, participate in a community art project and more.
